Ice fishing is a Midwest tradition, from Minnesota and Wisconsin to Michigan, Iowa and the Dakotas, and the gear can be as simple or as elaborate as you like. Safety first
Ice conditions vary across a lake and change through the season. Always check local conditions, ask at bait shops and follow guidance from your state's natural resources agency (for example the Minnesota, Wisconsin or Michigan DNR). State agencies commonly stress that no ice is ever completely safe. Commonly cited minimums are about four inches of clear, solid ice for walking, but snow-covered, slushy or moving-water ice can be much weaker.
Ice picks worn around the neck
Inexpensive handheld spikes that help you pull yourself out of the water if you go through. Many anglers consider them mandatory.
Ice spud bar or chisel
Used to test ice thickness ahead of you as you walk, especially early and late in the season.
Flotation suit (for example, from Striker or Frabill)

Augers
Hand augers are light, quiet and affordable, and they work well early in the season when ice is thinner. Gas augers cut fast through thick ice but are heavy and loud. Rods, reels and line
Ice rods are short, typically 24 to 36 inches. Light and ultralight rods work for panfish, while medium rods suit walleye and pike. Many anglers use small spinning reels or inline reels designed to reduce line twist. Low-stretch line helps you feel light bites in cold water. Keep warm
