From Wisconsin's Devil's Lake to Minnesota's North Shore and Michigan's Upper Peninsula, the Midwest has outstanding camping. Our weather can be the trickiest part: humid summer nights, buggy evenings near water and fall temperatures that can drop below freezing. This checklist focuses on car camping and short trips, with notes on features that matter in this climate.

Shelter
A tent with a full-coverage rainfly handles summer thunderstorms far better than one with a small cap-style fly. Look for taped seams, a bathtub-style floor and good ventilation to reduce condensation on humid nights. For car camping, a tent rated for one or two more people than your group gives room for gear.
Coleman Sundome or REI Co-op Base Camp style tents
Coleman offers affordable dome tents that are popular for occasional campers. Higher-end family tents such as the REI Co-op Base Camp line add sturdier poles, more vestibule space and stronger weather protection.
Footprint or ground tarp
Protects your tent floor from rocks and moisture. Keep it slightly smaller than the tent floor so it does not collect rain.
Kelty or ALPS Mountaineering canopy shelter
A screened shelter over the picnic table is a big quality-of-life upgrade when the mosquitoes come out.
Sleeping system
Your sleeping pad matters as much as your sleeping bag, because the ground pulls heat from your body. Pads have R-values describing insulation; higher numbers are warmer. For spring and fall in the Upper Midwest, a pad with an R-value of 3 or higher is a common recommendation, and you can stack a foam pad under an inflatable one.
Sleeping bags have temperature ratings, but these are often survival or limit ratings rather than comfort ratings. Choose a bag rated about ten degrees colder than the lowest temperature you expect.
Therm-a-Rest or Klymit sleeping pads
Widely available pads with published R-values. Self-inflating and air pads pack smaller than foam.
Coleman or Kelty synthetic sleeping bags
Synthetic insulation keeps some warmth when damp, which helps in humid conditions. Down bags are lighter and pack smaller for the same warmth.
Camp kitchen
A cast iron skillet is a durable choice for cooking over a camp stove or fire. A two-burner propane stove is the standard for car camping. Bring a cooler with good ice retention, a cast iron skillet or a nonstick pan, a pot, utensils, a cutting board and a wash basin. Bring biodegradable soap and plan to pack out trash.
Coleman Classic two-burner propane stove
An inexpensive, long-running design that runs on small propane cylinders.
Yeti, RTIC or Coleman Xtreme cooler
Rotomolded coolers like Yeti and RTIC hold ice longer but are heavier and more expensive. Coleman's Xtreme line is a lighter, budget-friendly alternative.
Firewood note: many Midwest states, including Wisconsin, restrict moving firewood to help stop the spread of invasive pests such as emerald ash borer. Buy certified or local firewood near where you camp and check your state's DNR or state park rules before bringing your own.
Bugs and ticks
Mosquitoes, black flies and ticks are a fact of Midwest summers. Use an EPA-registered insect repellent, treat clothing with permethrin according to the label directions, and check for ticks daily.
Thermacell mosquito repeller
A device that creates a repellent zone around a campsite or picnic table. Effectiveness depends on wind and placement.
Sawyer permethrin clothing spray
A clothing and gear treatment that repels ticks and mosquitoes for several washes. Apply only to fabric, not skin.
Lighting and power
A headlamp keeps your hands free. A lantern lights the table or tent. A small battery bank keeps phones charged for maps and emergencies.
Black Diamond or Petzl headlamp
Reliable headlamps with multiple brightness modes and a red light mode that preserves night vision.

The bottom line
Prioritize a weatherproof tent, a warm sleeping pad, a reliable stove and good bug protection. Everything else can be added over time as you learn what your group actually uses.
Frequently asked questions
What sleeping pad R-value do I need for Midwest camping?
For three-season camping in Minnesota, Wisconsin or Michigan where spring and fall nights get cold, look for an insulated sleeping pad with an R-value of 3.0 or higher.
Can I bring my own firewood to Midwest state parks?
Many Midwest states restrict transporting firewood to stop invasive pests like the emerald ash borer. Buy certified heat-treated or local firewood near your campground.
