Sitting still in a deer stand in November or on the ice in January is a different kind of cold than walking or skiing. You are not generating much heat, so the right layers matter. This guide explains the classic layering system and the gear that makes long cold days more comfortable.

The three-layer system
The base layer sits against your skin and moves sweat away. Merino wool and synthetic fabrics like polyester both work. Merino resists odor and stays warm when damp; synthetics dry faster and usually cost less. Avoid cotton, which holds moisture and makes you cold.
The middle layer traps heat. Fleece, wool and insulated jackets filled with down or synthetic insulation all work. Synthetic insulation keeps more of its warmth when wet, which matters on the ice. Down is warmer for its weight but loses insulation when soaked.
The outer layer blocks wind and moisture. For ice fishing, insulated bibs and a jacket designed for the ice, some with built-in flotation, are popular. For hunting, quiet fabrics and blaze orange are important. Midwest states require hunter-visible clothing during firearm deer seasons, and the rules differ: Wisconsin, for example, allows blaze orange or blaze pink. Check your state's DNR rules for the current requirements.
Manage sweat on the way in
If you are heading onto the ice, our ice fishing gear guide covers augers, shelters and safety gear. The walk to the stand or the drag out to your spot can make you sweat, and that moisture chills you once you sit still. Many hunters and anglers carry their outer layers and put them on after they arrive.
Hands, feet and head
Insulated, waterproof boots rated for cold temperatures are a must. Leave room for a thick wool sock; tight boots restrict circulation and feel colder. Mittens are warmer than gloves; many people wear thin liner gloves inside mittens so they can handle gear. A warm hat and a neck gaiter or balaclava cut heat loss. Chemical hand and toe warmers are inexpensive and useful on long sits.
Picks worth a closer look
Merino wool base layer
A top and bottom set in a midweight fabric is a versatile starting point for most cold days.
Synthetic insulated jacket
A warm middle layer that keeps much of its insulation when damp.
Striker Ice or Frabill ice suits
Insulated jackets and bibs designed for ice anglers; some models include flotation assistance.
Insulated waterproof boots
Look for a temperature rating suited to sitting still and enough room for wool socks.
Chemical hand and toe warmers
Inexpensive, disposable warmth for long sits.

Frequently asked questions
What is the three-layer system for hunting and ice fishing?
Start with a moisture-wicking merino wool or synthetic base layer against your skin, add a fleece or insulated mid-layer to trap body heat, and finish with a windproof, water-resistant outer shell or insulated bib.
Why should you avoid cotton clothing in cold weather?
Cotton absorbs sweat and moisture and holds it against your skin, which rapidly chills you once you stop walking and sit still in a deer stand or on the ice.
