How to Keep a Home Office Warm in Winter: Space Heaters, Drafts and Cozy Gear

Spare bedrooms, basement corners and converted porches make handy home offices, but they are often the coldest rooms in the house once the furnace starts running in late October. Turning up the whole-house thermostat to warm one room is expensive. A better plan is to fix the drafts, heat the room you are actually sitting in, and keep your hands and feet warm. This guide covers what to look for and how to stay safe while you do it.

Fix the cold before you add heat
Start with the cheap stuff. Run your hand around the window frame and the bottom of the door on a windy day; if you feel moving air, weatherstripping, a door sweep or clear window insulation film will help. Our smart thermostat and winter energy savers guide covers those draft fixes in more detail. A rug over a cold floor, especially on a basement slab, makes a noticeable difference, and heavier curtains help at night. Check that the heat register in the room is open and not blocked by a desk or bookcase.
Space heater types
Ceramic heaters use a fan to push air across a heated ceramic element. They warm a small area quickly, are compact enough to sit near a desk, and are usually inexpensive. The fan makes some noise, which may show up on calls.
Oil-filled radiators heat sealed oil that warms the surrounding air without a fan. They take longer to warm up but are quiet and give steady, even heat, which suits an office you sit in for hours. They are heavier, and most have wheels.
Infrared or quartz heaters warm the people and objects in front of them rather than the air, so they feel warm quickly when pointed at you. They work best when you sit in one spot.
Circulating or vortex-style heaters pair a heating element with a stronger fan that moves warm air around the whole room. They are useful in larger or open rooms.
How much heat do you need?
Most portable electric heaters sold for home use are rated at 1,500 watts on high, which is about the most a standard household outlet is meant to handle. That means size matters less than placement and insulation. Running a 1,500-watt heater for an hour uses about 1.5 kilowatt-hours of electricity. To estimate the cost, multiply that by the rate on your utility bill. A low setting and a thermostat that cycles the heater on and off can cut that considerably.
Safety rules worth following
Fire safety organizations such as the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and the National Fire Protection Association publish the same basic advice every winter. Plug a space heater directly into a wall outlet, not an extension cord or power strip. Keep it at least three feet from anything that can burn, including curtains, paper and your trash can under the desk. Look for tip-over protection, overheat shutoff and a certification mark from a testing lab such as UL, ETL or CSA. Turn it off when you leave the room, and make sure your smoke alarms work.
Keep your hands and feet warm
Cold feet are the most common home office complaint in a Wisconsin January. An under-desk heated foot mat or panel uses far less power than a room heater and warms exactly where you need it. A heated throw or a pair of fingerless gloves can keep you comfortable at a lower room temperature. A good ergonomic chair with a padded seat also feels warmer than cold mesh in a drafty room.
Picks worth a closer look
De'Longhi oil-filled radiator
A fan-free radiator-style heater with adjustable thermostat settings and wheels for moving between rooms. A good fit if you want quiet, steady heat during calls.
Vornado whole-room vortex heater
A circulating heater designed to move warm air through an entire room, with automatic safety shutoff features on many models. Useful for larger or open offices.
Lasko ceramic tower heater
A compact ceramic heater with a small footprint, adjustable thermostat and oscillation on many models. Fits beside a desk without taking much floor space.
Dr Infrared portable heater
An infrared-style heater with a fan, remote control and thermostat on many models, popular for basements and bigger spaces.
Under-desk heated foot mat or panel
A low-wattage heated mat or panel that sits under your desk to warm your feet and legs, often with an automatic shutoff timer.
Heated throw blanket
An electric throw with adjustable heat settings and an auto shutoff, a low-cost way to stay warm without heating the whole room.
Where to buy
An electric standing desk lets you stand up and move periodically to keep your circulation going in a chilly office, while wood-look desktops feel warmer under your wrists than glass or metal. These desks are available from retailers we partner with. We have not tested them; compare their dimensions against your space before buying.

Seal the drafts first, then add one well-placed space heater with tip-over and overheat protection, plugged straight into the wall. Add a heated foot mat or throw for the coldest days. That combination keeps a home office comfortable without paying to heat the whole house. If the room also feels gloomy by four in the afternoon, our home office lighting guide can help with that, too.
