Lighting is one of the easiest home office upgrades to overlook. Many home offices are spare bedrooms or basement corners with a single ceiling fixture, and that is rarely enough for comfortable screen work, especially during Midwest winters when it is dark by late afternoon. Good lighting (along with a well-adjusted ergonomic chair) reduces glare and eye strain and makes you look much better on video calls.

Start with layers
Think in three layers. Ambient light is the general light in the room, usually from a ceiling fixture or floor lamp. Task light is a focused light on your desk for paperwork. Accent or fill light is used mostly for video calls, to light your face evenly. Most offices need at least two of these.
Color temperature and brightness
Color temperature is measured in kelvin. Lower numbers (around 2700K) look warm and yellow, like traditional bulbs. Higher numbers (5000K and up) look cool and closer to daylight. Many people prefer neutral-to-cool light while working and warmer light in the evening. Adjustable lamps let you do both.
Brightness is measured in lumens for bulbs. Instead of chasing a number, aim for a workspace bright enough to read paper documents comfortably without your screen looking dim by comparison. A big contrast between a bright screen and a dark room is one of the most common causes of eye fatigue.
Look for a high CRI (color rendering index), ideally 90 or above, if you care about accurate colors on camera or in printed documents.
Avoiding glare
Place your monitor perpendicular to windows when possible, so daylight is not directly behind the screen or directly behind you. Position a desk lamp to the side of your work, not shining onto the screen. Matte monitor finishes help, too.
Product types worth a look
BenQ ScreenBar monitor light
A light bar that clips onto the top of a monitor and shines down onto the desk without reflecting off the screen. Models offer adjustable brightness and color temperature, and some include an auto-dimming sensor. Great for small desks where a lamp would take up space.
Adjustable LED desk lamp with swing arm
A clamp-on or weighted-base lamp with an articulating arm lets you aim light exactly where you need it. Look for dimming, adjustable color temperature and a stable base. Brands such as BenQ, TaoTronics and IKEA all offer versions at different price points.
Elgato Key Light Air or similar panel
A flat LED panel designed for video calls and streaming. These can be controlled from a computer or phone and adjusted for brightness and warmth. A single panel placed slightly to one side and above eye level makes a big difference on camera.
Ring light with stand
A budget-friendly option for even facial lighting on calls. Ring lights are simple to set up but can create a visible ring reflection in glasses; positioning them slightly off-center helps.
Smart bulbs for ambient light
Replacing a ceiling or floor lamp bulb with a smart bulb from Philips Hue, Wyze or similar lets you schedule cooler light during the workday and warmer light in the evening.
A simple video-call setup
Face a window if you can, since soft daylight is the most flattering light. When daylight is gone, place a key light or panel in front of you and slightly to one side, about forty-five degrees off center and a little above eye level. Keep a dim ambient light on behind you so the background is not black. Avoid sitting with a bright window behind you, which turns you into a silhouette.
Budget approach
If you only buy one thing, make it an adjustable desk lamp or monitor light bar for task lighting. Add a single inexpensive panel or ring light if you are on camera often. Swap your room bulb for a neutral-white LED bulb with high CRI. Those three steps cost relatively little and solve most home office lighting problems.
Where to buy
A well-lit workspace starts with a desk that has room for your monitors, task lamp and video-call light. These home office desks and workspace tools are available from retailers we partner with. We have not tested them; compare their dimensions against your room before buying.

Frequently asked questions
What color temperature is best for working?
Many people prefer neutral-to-cool light (around 4000K to 5000K) during work and warmer light (2700K to 3000K) in the evening. Adjustable LED lamps let you switch between both.
Where should I place a light for video calls?
Place a soft key light slightly in front of you at about a 45-degree angle and just above eye level, and avoid bright unshaded windows directly behind you.
