If you work from home, your chair is the piece of gear you use the most hours per week. A chair that fits poorly can leave you with a stiff neck, sore lower back or numb legs by mid-afternoon. The good news is that you do not need to spend a fortune to get a chair that fits well. You need to know which adjustments matter and how to set them up for your body.

The adjustments that matter most
Seat height is the starting point. With your feet flat on the floor, your thighs should be roughly parallel to the ground and your knees at about the same height as your hips. Almost every chair has a gas lift for this, but check the published height range if you are especially tall or short.
Seat depth is the adjustment many cheaper chairs skip. You should be able to fit two or three fingers between the front edge of the seat and the back of your knees. A seat that is too deep pushes you forward away from the backrest; one that is too shallow leaves your thighs unsupported. A sliding seat pan solves this for most people.
Lumbar support should sit in the small of your back. Adjustable lumbar, whether a sliding pad or a height-adjustable backrest, is far more useful than a fixed bump that may land in the wrong place for you.
Armrests should let your shoulders relax with your elbows near ninety degrees. Height-adjustable arms are the minimum; arms that also pivot or slide in and out make it easier to get close to your desk.
Tilt and recline matter if you lean back on calls. If you also want to work standing, our standing desk guide covers desk heights to pair with your chair. A tilt lock and tension knob let you choose between upright typing and a relaxed recline.
Mesh or padded?
Mesh backs breathe well, which many people appreciate in a warm home office in July. Padded foam seats can feel more comfortable at first but may compress over a few years. Many popular chairs combine a mesh back with a foam seat. Neither is objectively better; it comes down to preference and climate.
Picks worth a closer look
Herman Miller Aeron
A long-running design known for its mesh seat and back, multiple sizes (A, B and C) and a long manufacturer warranty. It is expensive, but buying in the right size is one of the best ways to get a good fit. Refurbished units are common.
Steelcase Leap
Widely recommended for its adjustable seat depth, adjustable lower-back firmness and flexible backrest that moves with you. A padded option for people who do not love mesh.
Branch Ergonomic Chair
A mid-priced option with a long list of adjustments, including seat depth, lumbar and multi-direction armrests, at a price well below the premium brands.
HON Ignition 2.0
A practical, office-grade chair with adjustable lumbar and seat depth on many configurations. A good choice if you want durability without paying premium prices.
How to set your chair up
Once it arrives, adjust in this order: seat height, seat depth, lumbar, armrests, then tilt tension. Then adjust your desk and monitor to the chair, not the other way around. The top of your screen should sit at or slightly below eye level, about an arm's length away. If your desk is too high and cannot be lowered, raise the chair and add a footrest.
Budget tips
Check warranty length before price. A chair with a long warranty from a known manufacturer often costs less per year of use than a cheap chair you replace every eighteen months. Look at certified refurbished office chairs, which often carry their own warranties. Finally, if you can, sit in a chair before buying, or confirm the return policy so you can send it back if it does not fit.
Where to buy
Your chair works best when paired with a desk at the right height. These height-adjustable and office desks are available from retailers we partner with. We have not tested them; compare their measurements against the setup advice above before buying.

Prioritize seat depth, adjustable lumbar and adjustable armrests. Pick mesh or foam based on comfort. Then spend ten minutes setting it up properly. That combination does more for your back than any single brand name.
Frequently asked questions
How do I know if a chair's seat depth fits me?
With your back against the backrest, you should be able to fit two or three fingers between the seat's front edge and the back of your knees.
Are mesh office chairs better than padded foam chairs?
Mesh breathes better in warm rooms, while high-density foam offers cushioned support. Many popular ergonomic chairs combine a breathable mesh backrest with a padded foam seat.
