Your first Midwest winter in a new house brings a new chore: clearing the driveway and sidewalk, often before work. Many municipalities also have rules about clearing public sidewalks within a set time after snow stops, so check your city's ordinance. This guide covers how to choose a snow blower, plus the shovels and ice melt that round out a winter kit.

Single-stage, two-stage or three-stage?
Single-stage blowers use one fast-spinning auger that scoops up snow and throws it out the chute in one motion. They are lighter, cheaper and easier to store, and work well on paved driveways with light to moderate snow. Because the auger touches the ground, they are not meant for gravel driveways.
Two-stage blowers use an auger to gather snow and a separate impeller to throw it. They handle deeper, heavier and wetter snow, including the hard pile the plow leaves at the end of your driveway. Most are self-propelled and can be adjusted to ride above gravel. They are bigger, heavier and cost more.
Three-stage blowers add an accelerator that helps chew through heavy, icy snow. They are mainly worth considering for large driveways or areas with frequent heavy snowfall.
Gas or battery?
Battery-powered blowers have improved a lot. They start instantly, are quieter, need no gas or oil changes and are easy to store. They suit small to medium paved driveways. Run time depends on the battery and snow conditions, so a second battery can be useful.
Gas blowers are still the usual choice for long driveways, deep snow and the heavy plow ridge. They need seasonal maintenance, including fresh or stabilized fuel.
Features that matter
Clearing width and intake height determine how many passes you need and how deep a snowfall the blower can handle in one go. Electric start on gas models avoids pull-cord struggles on cold mornings. Heated handles and LED lights are nice for early-morning clearing. A chute that adjusts from the handle saves stopping to change direction.
Shovels and ice melt
For staying warm while you clear, see our cold-weather layering guide. Even with a blower, you will want a good shovel for steps, decks and light snows. An ergonomic shovel with a bent handle can reduce bending, and a wide pusher-style shovel is fast on flat surfaces.
For ice melt, read the label. Rock salt (sodium chloride) is inexpensive but works less well in very low temperatures and can damage concrete, plants and pet paws. Calcium chloride and magnesium chloride blends work at lower temperatures. Products labeled pet-friendly are worth considering if you have dogs. Use only as much as the label recommends.

Where to buy
Clearing an icy driveway is much safer and warmer with slip-resistant winter boots, and a cordless tire inflator keeps snow blower and car tires properly inflated in sub-zero weather. For a typical paved suburban driveway, a single-stage blower, gas or battery, handles most storms. If you have a long or gravel driveway or regularly face heavy plow ridges, step up to a two-stage model. Add a good shovel and ice melt suited to your surfaces and pets.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a single-stage or two-stage snow blower?
Single-stage snow blowers work well on flat, paved driveways with light-to-moderate snow. Two-stage snow blowers handle deeper, wet snow, gravel driveways and heavy end-of-driveway plow ridges.
What ice melt works best in extreme Midwest cold?
Calcium chloride and magnesium chloride blends work at much lower temperatures than standard rock salt (sodium chloride) and are available in pet-friendly formulations.
